SER Electrical Wire - Service Entrance Cable Information

Type SE electrical wire stands for Service Entrance and the "R" stands for Round because this cable is round instead of flat. There is a 2 conductor and a 3 conductor version available and both come with an additional bare ground wire. SER Cables are used to run power from a telephone pole to an electrical box in a home or building. From the electrical box smaller cables will run to the lights, outlets and appliances throughout the home.

Construction

Type SE, SER cable, and SEU cable are all manufactured with the same metals and materials. The "R" is a round cable and the "U" is a flat cable where the conductors lie next to each other rather than bundled. Thick copper strands are used because flexibility isn't a common request for any electrical cables. Each of the conductors is approved with THHN THWN insulation excluding the additional ground wire. The ground is bare concentric lay which is 7 strands wound together. Finally, there is a gray PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) jacket with enough protection to be used outdoors or in conduit, tray or raceway. It cannot be used directly in the ground because it's not manufactured with enough protection of nupower.

Approvals

SER cables are approved with UL, RoHS, REACH and Military specification AA59544. The insulated conductors are approved as THHN and THWN with printing on the insulation. The stranded bare copper ground wire is a size or 2 smaller than the conductors because it requires less amperage.
